Placement Test
In order to be successful in college-level courses, students must have adequate foundational knowledge and skills. Pellissippi State provides refresher courses in reading, English, math and study skills to assist students in developing college-level skills in each of these areas. Students are placed into these courses based on the results of a placement tests.
New students must submit valid ACT/SAT scores. If students do not have ACT/SAT scores, students will take a COMPASS test.
**Valid test scores have been earned within 3 years prior to the first day of class of the student's entering term.

Students with scores below the minimum score in either the ACT/SAT or COMPASS must take the Placement Test in the area(s) that are below college level.
Placement test scores determine course placement in Learning Support reading, English, or math courses or college-level English or math courses.
Students with college-level transfer credit in English and math do not have to take the placement test.
Placement Test Information
Pellissippi State provides preparation sessions in Math, Reading and Writing to assist students in taking the Placement Tests. Students are placed into courses based on the results of a placement test.

- Photo ID
- Calculator (not a TI89 or 92)
- Pencils and paper
- Students who need accommodations for taking the practice Placement Test can call the Services for Students with Disabilities Office at 539-7153 for arrangements.

The Magnolia Avenue Placement Prep Session focuses on improving basic academic skills. The first day consists of a pre-test to determine what students need to study. The following days will include preparatory work in mathematics and reading/writing (students can choose which areas to study) The official placement test (post-test) to determine a student’s placement into courses at Pellissippi State is scheduled on the last day.
