How do online classes work?

As you browse class options, each class has a details page listing the syllabus, computer and software requirements and instructor information. Most online classes are instructor-led, allowing you to learn on a structured six-week schedule with instructor moderation and a discussion board, while some classes offer a longer self-paced completion option. With both class structures, there is not a set day or time that you must login to meet with the instructor or other students in the class. You are able to log into the classroom and participate any time of day or evening.

To successfully complete an online class or certificate program, you will need to meet the following expectations:

After you register for a class or certificate program, you’ll receive an email with the web address to access the online classroom. Information will be sent to the email you used to register for the class. If you do not receive an email by the day prior to the start of the class, please contact our office at 865.539.7167.

Classes are typically four to six weeks in length, while full certificate programs can take three months or longer to complete. Self-paced classes usually allow three months for class completion.

Class materials are accessible for the duration of the class, so you can work ahead or go back and review. For classes that are instructor-led, new materials will be posted each week. We recommend logging into the class at least two to three different days of the week to engage in the online discussion board. Your instructor will log into the discussion board at least once each day to answer questions, make comments and respond to comments.

To complete the class, you will need to review the online readings and presentation each week and engage in the online discussion board with your instructor and other class participants. There will also be hands-on assignments and quizzes throughout the class to assess your understanding of the material.
