Personal Development - FOOD & WINE
Colonial Cookery
This unique and most informative class will cover early American baking and cooking as it was done during the Colonial period, before and during the War for American Independence. Covered are such little known things such as how the woman of the house baked in the oven of a fireplace; how temperature was determined since no gages existed at that time; making yeast since none was available in stores as it is today; kinds of food available to the Colonists; and much, much more. Various old-time recipes will be shared with the students. The student will be able to return home and make the identical food items as those that were enjoyed by the Colonists. In addition you will learn historical facts about families that used the recipes, customs, and superstitions relating to food in the Colonies. Instructor Robert Pelton has published hundreds of feature articles and more than 60 books including seven historical cook books.
