Whether you’re drawn to the water or to the links, Pellissippi State Community College offers a selection of non-credit courses geared toward whatever your sports and outdoor activities are. Classes cover fly-fishing, scuba diving, golf and a whole lot more.
Unless otherwise noted, all classes meet at the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.
A partial selection of spring 2011 sports courses includes the following:
- “Fly-fish 101”
April 2, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; $75 per single/$60 for each additional family member registering at the same time; Blount County Campus, 2731 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy.
April 23 or May 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; $75 per single/$60 for each additional family member registering at the same time
This introductory course is appropriate for those who have never fly-fished, as well as for those who have started but want a better understanding of the basics. The class will include a casting demonstration, weather permitting.
- “Introduction to Scuba Diving”
April 2-3 or May 14-15, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; $212, plus $87.25 course materials fee payable to instructor at the first class; Ski/Scuba Center, 2543 Sutherland Ave.
This course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of scuba diving. It also covers classroom and pool training for the qualifying dives required for Scuba Schools International certification. Students must provide personal gear, including mask, fins, snorkel and boots.
- “An Introduction to Golf”
April 4-13 (Mondays and Wednesdays) or May 3-12 (Tuesdays and Thursdays), 6-7 p.m.; $65, plus $10 facility fee paid to instructor at the first class; Target Golf, 5311 W. Beaver Creek Dr.
This is an introduction for novices who wish to secure a better understanding of the basic mechanics, history and methodology of golf. Objectives include becoming familiar with equipment, procedures and the basic movements of golfing techniques.
- “Intermediate Golf Workshop”
April 18-27 (Mondays and Wednesdays) or May 17-26 (Tuesdays and Thursdays), 6-7 p.m.; $65, plus $10 facility fee paid to instructor at the first class; Target Golf, 5311 W. Beaver Creek Dr.
Designed for golfers with some playing ability, this course teaches participants how to improve their game. Activities include clinic instruction, as well as hands-on repetition.
