Whether you prefer taking to the water or staying on solid ground, Pellissippi State Community College has a full slate of non-credit sports classes this summer that will get you moving outdoors. Here are just a few offered through the Business and Community Services Division:
- “Introduction to Scuba Diving”—June 4 and 5, July 9 and 10 or Aug. 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday), 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; $212, plus an $87.25 course materials fee to Ski/Scuba Center. Spend a weekend at Ski/Scuba Center, 2543 Sutherland Ave., learning the fundamentals of scuba diving. Students receive the classroom and pool training that a recreational diver must have prior to taking the qualifying dives required for Scuba Schools International certification. Equipment is provided.
- “An Introduction to Golf”—June 7-16 or July 12-21 (Tuesdays and Thursdays), 6-7 p.m.; $65, plus $10 facility fee. Learn the basics from a Class A Professional Golf Association instructor in this four-class series. Students will practice the basic mechanics of swing, as well as the controlled motions for chipping/putting. Instruction also includes golf etiquette, the golf course check-in process and cart operation. Classes meet at Target Golf, 5311 W. Beaver Creek Dr.
- “Fly-fish 101”—June 18, July 16 or Aug. 13 at the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, and June 25, July 23 or Aug. 20 at the Blount County Campus, 2731 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy., 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at both sites; $75 per single, $60 for each additional family member registering at the same time. This seven-hour course is geared to those who have never fly-fished and those who have begun but seek a better understanding of the basics. Students will learn such skills as how to cast (casting demonstration, weather permitting), how to rig an outfit and how to select flies.
- “Intermediate Golf Workshop”—June 21-30 or Aug. 9-18 (Tuesdays and Thursdays), 6-7 p.m.; $65, plus $10 facility fee. This four-class series is for intermediate-level golfers who wish to improve their game. Clinic-style instruction, as well as hands-on repetition, will create a better understanding of the techniques involved in striking the ball from the tee through the final putt. The instructor is a Class A PGA professional. Classes meet at Target Golf, 5311 W. Beaver Creek Dr.
