Openings available in popular Chinese language, culture classes at Pellissippi State

Last spring was the first semester that Pellissippi State Community College offered “Beginning Chinese I” as part of the school’s Confucius Classroom. The course was full long before registration ended.

Fall semester begins Aug. 27, and the college is encouraging those interested in learning Mandarin Chinese to go ahead and sign up now for the course, before it is once again filled. Some seats also are still available for “Peoples and Culture of China.”

Registration continues through Aug. 25, and the application deadline is Aug. 11.

Both 3-credit courses are offered through Pellissippi State’s Confucius Classroom. The Confucius Classroom is the result of a prestigious grant made to the college by the Confucius Institute at the University of Memphis.

Pellissippi State is the only community college in Tennessee to receive a grant for the establishment of a Confucius Classroom. The award includes funding for a full-time instructor from China. Qiao Gui-qiang, also known as “Freeman,” serves as the instructor for the classes.

The fall 2011 courses available as part of the Confucius Classroom are “Beginning Chinese I” (MLC 1010), “Beginning Chinese II” (MLC 1020) and “Peoples and Culture of China” (LAS 2020).
