Pellissippi State campuses plan varied activities to honor Martin Luther King Day

Each of Pellissippi State Community College’s four campuses—three in Knox County and one in Blount County—has planned different activities surrounding the Jan. 16 observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Here’s what is scheduled:

Pellissippi State’s Access and Diversity Office will sponsor free birthday cake at the Pellissippi Campus for students, faculty and staff. The celebration takes place Jan. 13, 12:15-1 p.m., in the Goins Building, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.

“I Have a Dream” Canvas—Students, faculty and staff of the Division Street Campus share the opportunity to see and hear memorabilia of the civil rights leader. Free birthday cake will be served in the Student Lounge. The celebration is Jan. 13, 12-1:30 p.m. The campus is located at 3435 Division St.

MLK Parade Knoxville—Pellissippi State students, faculty and staff will participate in the MLK Parade on Jan. 16, meeting at 9 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2137 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

Freedom Walk Blount County—Pellissippi State students, faculty and staff will take part in Blount County’s Freedom Walk on Jan. 16. Participants will gather at 12:15 p.m. at the MLK Center, 209 E. Franklin St., Alcoa.

Speeches of Martin Luther King, a free documentary screening, runs approximately one hour. The speeches are presented Jan. 17, 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., at the West Chevrolet Auditorium on the Blount County Campus, 2731 W. Lamar Alexander Pkwy., Friendsville.

Dr. King: Martin’s Mentors is a free performance by actor Horace Smith in the Community Room of the Magnolia Avenue Campus. Length of program is approximately 30 minutes. Free birthday cake will be served in the Lobby following the performance. The activity is Jan. 17 at 11 a.m., 1610 E. Magnolia Ave.
