Pellissippi State holds free jazz concert for community

Pellissippi State Community College will host the Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra and special guest Joe Murphy for a free community concert Thursday, Feb. 18.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Clayton Performing Arts Center, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. Seats will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.  

The Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra is an honors band of East Tennessee high school students under the direction of Knoxville Jazz Orchestra’s lead trombonist, Tom Lundberg.

Joe Murphy is one of the top recording tuba players in the United States. He has played live and recorded with dozens of artists, including Michael Bolton, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Brad Paisley, Michael W. Smith and The Fifth Dimension, among others. His music has been heard in the soundtracks of video games like “Call of Duty: Black Ops” and “Star Wars,” in the History Channel series “Texas Rising” and in the film “The Last Witch Hunter.”

The Knoxville Jazz Youth Orchestra concert is one of the events that makes up Pellissippi State’s arts series, The Arts at Pellissippi State. The series brings to the community cultural activities ranging from music and theatre to international celebrations, lectures and the fine arts.
