Sen. Lamar Alexander will be on the Hardin Valley Campus Tuesday, Oct. 21, for a presentation about the Financial Aid Simplification and Transparency Act. The bill for the FAST Act was introduced by Alexander and Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado.
Alexander’s visit is part of a round-table discussion that includes Anthony Wise, Pellissippi State president, and other area college presidents, as well as student, parent, and high school representatives. The free event, which begins at 1 p.m. in the Goins Building Auditorium, is open to the public.
The bill proposes to eliminate the current iteration of the Free Application for Financial Student Aid, or FAFSA, by reducing the form to two questions: what is your family size, and what was your household income two years ago? The bill also streamlines federal grant and loan programs, simplifies repayment options, and limits the amount a student is eligible to borrow based on enrollment status.
