Madden will discuss Appalachian culture and literature and his new book, “The Tangled Web of the Civil War and Reconstruction.” The event is 2-2:55 p.m. in the Goins Building Auditorium. All faculty and staff are invited, and faculty members are encouraged to bring their classes.

Additionally, Madden addresses faculty members from 12:55-1:50 p.m. in McWherter 337. He will discuss Appalachia and ideas to develop curricula for the Common Academic Experience. This year’s Common Academic Experience revolves around the book “The United States of Appalachia” by Jeff Biggers.
Madden, a native Knoxvillian, is the author of “Bijou,” “Sharpshooter: A Novel of the Civil War” and “The Suicide’s Wife,” for which he received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. He was on campus to speak when “Sharpshooter” was the Common Book pick a few years ago.
