Everyone invited to annual Student Scholarship Book Sale

All types of books—from fiction to non-fiction and children’s books to cookbooks—will be available at this year’s Student Scholarship Book Sale. The sale, which is held annually, will take place at all five campuses during March and April. Proceeds from the sale go directly toward student scholarships.

Bargain hunters may also find collectible magazines like National Geographic, as well as a nice selection of DVDs and CDs. Pellissippi State faculty, staff and students, as well as community members, contributed items for the sale.

Career Fair hosts 40 businesses on March 23

Be sure your students know that this semester’s career fair will be held 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the College Center of the Hardin Valley Campus Wednesday, March 23. More than 40 local businesses will have representatives ready to meet students.

Students should bring their resume and dress professionally.

We Are Family: Internal Giving Campaign includes two new funds

Tree SilhouetteThis year, donors to Pellissippi State’s Internal Giving Campaign have two brand-new funds to support as part of the college family.

The Pellissippi Pantry fund will support a five-campus food pantry that will provide nutritious packaged and fresh food to students in need. The pantry will be completely confidential for participating students. It will launch in summer 2016 in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee and Pellissippi State’s own community garden.

The Hardin Valley Campus Garden fund will support a community garden scheduled to open later this month. The garden will provide food for the Pellissippi Pantry and for the Hardin Valley Campus cafeteria, Service-Learning opportunities for students and a learning environment for sustainable agricultural practices.

Last year, employees gave more than $83,000 to support students, but the financial need of students is real and continual — especially as state funding formulas and federal financial aid availability changes. In many cases, it is college-based scholarships that keep Pellissippi State students in the classroom.

This year’s campaign chairs are Strawberry Plains dean Mike North, English instructor Heather Schroeder and administrative secretary Gypsy Harrill.

Students & employees invited to Women in STEM panel

Employees and students are invited to learn more about underrepresented women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields during a luncheon panel discussion Monday, March 21.

The Women in STEM panel discussion will be held 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the community room of the Magnolia Avenue Campus. A light lunch will be provided.

The panel will include Madhavi Martin, senior scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Anima Narania, chemical engineer at RVT Process Equipment; Lisa Seeto, senior user experience engineer at Scripps Networks Interactive; and Meiko Thompson, Garrett Morgan STEM Clearinghouse coordinator at the University of Tennessee. The panelists will discuss their careers and field questions from the audience.

3D print cart available to faculty & staff

How would you use a 3D printer: would you create a teaching tool or a visual aid for your students?

Now, you have the opportunity to explore an emerging technology through a new mobile 3D printing cart available to faculty and staff.

The 3D printing cart was created by and is managed by Lynn Klett, instructor in Engineering and Media Technologies, using a Mobile Fellows grant. Mobile Fellows provides grants to faculty and staff members to use mobile and emerging technologies to encourage student success.

“The idea is that classes can borrow the cart to bring a new element of learning into the classroom, or that teachers could borrow the cart to create learning aids or educational models,” Klett said.
Recently, one of her own students used a 3D printer to create for her a mathematical model of three-dimensional space, so that students could visualize space inside x, y and z axes.

“That type of teaching tool is invaluable,” Klett says. “For someone who can’t imagine what that space looks like, or who’s trying to figure it out from looking at a two-dimensional drawing of an axis that’s not two-dimensional, this can make all the difference in understanding a concept or not.”

The portable cart comes equipped with a 3D printer called a “MakerBot” and with “3Doodlers,” or 3D-printing pens. The pens allow users to draw in three-dimensional space by producing a plastic polymer rather than ink.

“I can’t wait to see what art students can do with this technology when they can suddenly draw in three-dimensional space, or what Interior Design Technology students do when they can create 3D models rather than 2D renderings,” Klett says. “That’s what makes this technology so amazing: it’s how we use it in all types of educational environments.”

Service-Learning conference will feature national education expert

On Feb. 22, Pellissippi State will host a day-long conference about service-learning and other high-impact education practices. The conference is open to any Pellissippi State employee.

The keynote speaker is Caryn McTighe Musil, who is senior scholar and director of civic learning and democracy initiatives for the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Musil is the author of “A Crucible Moment: Civic Learning and Democracy’s Future,” a 2012 national report that advocates for more civic learning and democratic engagement in traditional learning situations. Tennessee Board of Regents is now highly encouraging all faculty to use high-impact practices like service-learning in their courses.

On Feb. 22, Musil will lead the day’s discussion about high-impact practices and their connection to democracy.

More than 2,500 students at Pellissippi State annually report volunteering in the community, either in conjunction with Service-Learning in their courses or as tnAchieves or Tennessee Promise scholarship recipients.

The Feb. 22 professional development conference will also include speakers from tnAchieves, Tennessee Campus Compact (who sponsors the conference along with Volunteer Tennessee) and Tennessee Board of Regents, plus panels of community college faculty from across Tennessee and of Tennessee Promise students.

Institutional Effectiveness, Assessment and Planning works to supply information to governments and agencies, as well as internally, regarding the College’s performance on key measures of effectiveness. While external reporting is important and necessary, the office is eager to work with individuals in the College on special projects and research questions. This will be the first of a series of monthly articles related to College initiatives, reporting, survey data and anything else of interest.

  • 2015-2016 Institutional Briefing: Each year, College representatives meet with the chancellor and Tennessee Board of Regents employees to discuss the College and issues of concern. It is a conversation that helps TBR to be aware of what is taking place in the College and to update the College on TBR initiatives.   • National Student Clearinghouse Data: The College participates in National Student Clearinghouse Research Center efforts by assisting in tracking students following their attendance at Pellissippi State. At pstcc.edu/ieap/FB_DR.php, “National Student Clearinghouse Report,” you can view a recent benchmark report published by the Clearinghouse regarding the fall 2008 cohort of Pellissippi State students.
  • Adult Learner Task Force: The College recently formed a task force to investigate data regarding adult learners. The task force includes employees from faculty and administrative and support staff. Hope Denny is chairing the task force, which is in the process of developing an adult learner profile and identifying the research questions the group feels need to be investigated. In the spring semester, the task force will share the data findings with the College through meetings on each campus.
  • Strategic Planning: The College is in the process of updating the Strategic Plan for 2015-2020. The strategic goals remain the same, but the Strategic Planning Committee is updating the initiatives for the next five years. Once the new Strategic Plan is available, IEAP will post it on the office’s Web page and notify staff and faculty.
