Pellissippi State’s Teacher Education program earns national honors

Pellissippi State Technical Community College’s Teacher Education program in math and science has been named one of the 10 best among community colleges by an international student honor society.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society will recognize Pellissippi State in March with a Best Practices in Teacher Preparation Award at a conference of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs in Atlanta.

The award recognizes community colleges that have best met the needs of students who will become future teachers of science and mathematics at all levels between pre-kindergarten and 12th grade.

The award is financed by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program.

The winning community colleges were selected on how effectively they prepare students and provide them with leadership opportunities through future teachers’ clubs, internships, professional development and professional organizations.

Colleges also were judged on innovative recruitment and retention strategies, smooth articulation to four-year colleges, emphasis placed on technology skills, service learning opportunities, early field experiences and mathematics and science courses designed specifically for future teachers.

“This is quite an exciting award for us,” said Allen Edwards, president of Pellissippi State. “We take seriously our role in helping the community by preparing students to become the teachers of tomorrow.”

The Atlanta conference March 16-17 is to include case study presentations by students at the 10 top community college teacher education programs, and the case studies and recommendations are to be published for broad distribution to the nation’s community colleges.

Among the students invited to represent Pellissippi State are Angie Davis, a second-year student, and Mary Galloway, a Tennessee Technological University senior who is concluding her studies in Tennessee Tech’s program at Pellissippi State.

Pellissippi State’s Teacher Education program has more than 470 students who expect to transfer to the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Lincoln Memorial University or Tennessee Tech to complete their degree.

“This award is nice recognition of the energy and commitment that Pellissippi students, faculty, staff and administrators have put into creating the Teacher Education program,” said Meg Moss, coordinator of the program. “Students, as well as local schools, can be assured that they will receive excellent preparation at Pellissippi State to become great teachers.”
