March 26, 2007 Adult Education program at Pellissippi State offers free GED preparationThinking about earning your GED this year? The Adult Education Program at Pellissippi State Technical Community College can give you the help you need to succeed. Even better, GED help at Pellissippi State is free!GED (General Educational Development) preparation is available Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., in Room 330 of the Educational Resources Center of the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road. Classes are also available at the Heart of Knoxville Career and Resource Center at our Magnolia Avenue Campus. Enrollment is open to everyone, and students receive individualized help where they need it the most. “Even if you’ve been out of school for years, there’s no reason to fear the GED,” said Joan Newman, supervisor of Adult Education at Pellissippi State. “About 70 percent of adults who take the GED pass it,” she said. “Unfortunately, only 1.5 percent of all adults who did not graduate from high school even attempt the GED. The GED diploma can open many doors of opportunity. Approximately 95% of Tennesseans take the GED exam to improve their employment opportunities. Those without a high school diploma or its equivalent are two times as likely to be unemployed, and on average, Tennesseans who earn their GED diplomas can expect $7,000 more per year in wages." “The odds of passing really are in your favor, especially when you’re prepared. We find that many students may be ready to take their GED exams after only 5-6 weeks of instruction.” Pellissippi State also offers a free practice test that, according to Newman, provides a reliable estimate of actual GED scores.
