Jan. 29, 2007 Prince Brown to speak at Pellissippi State’s Black History celebrationPrince Brown of Northern Kentucky University will be the keynote speaker for the Black History Month celebration at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in February.The event is free and open to the public. Brown, a former faculty member at Pellissippi State, will speak Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the Pellissippi Campus and at 7 p.m. in the Community Room at the Magnolia Avenue Campus, 1610 E. Magnolia Ave. Brown will discuss his research on the Underground Railroad. During the past five years, he has explored runaway slave ads as a way to develop an expandable, interactive database to study slavery and the legendary escape network. Between 1810 and 1850, as many as 100,000 fugitive slaves used the Underground Railroad to make their way to the North and Canada. Among other duties, Brown serves as the founding director of NKU’s Institute for Freedom Studies. He is also the director of Liberal Studies Programs at NKU and is currently working to institutionalize the university’s new focus on civic engagement and community outreach. Brown is the co-author of “The Social Construction of Race and Ethnicity in the United States,” a collection of classic and cutting-edge sociological research.
