April 24, 2007 Pellissippi State Spring Choral Concert set for April 26The combination of soul-stirring music and beautiful pictures of France should provide a temporary European vacation for anyone attending the April 26 Spring Choral Concert at Pellissippi State Technical Community College. The free concert is at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road, and the public is invited to attend. Both the Concert Chorale and the Variations Choral Ensemble will perform, and the student performance will culminate in a multimedia presentation of Variations’ recent concert tour in France. Variations performed in France in March, concentrating on the Normandy region and ending with an engagement at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. “We want the audience to feel as if they were on the trip with us,” said Bill Brewer, an associate professor of Music who accompanied the students abroad. The one-hour performance will include a variety of choral literature, including classics, contemporary selections and spirituals. A special feature will be “Dacian Elegy: A Prayer for Fallen Soldiers,” written by Pellissippi State Music student Nick Powell. Students will perform a well-known piece from the Classical Period, “Regina Coeli” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which showcases a solo quartet from the ensemble. Variations also will include a patriotic work, “For Spacious Skies,” to recognize the strong connection the U.S. has with Normandy—a history lesson the students learned when they visited the American Cemetery. The cemetery overlooks the site of the Allied invasion of France in 1944 that led to the country’s liberation from Nazi control. Variations is an auditioned ensemble specializing in choral chamber music and advanced choral repertoire. Performances are scheduled both on and off campus at the request of churches, civic groups and Pellissippi State. The Concert Chorale is open to all students at the college. The group sings a variety of musical styles and performs several times each semester. For additional information, contact Bill Brewer at (865) 694-6701 or lwbrewer@pstcc.edu.
