Pellissippi State offers contractor licensing exam review in June

Tennessee business laws that apply to contractors, current federal safety and health regulations and the basics of building codes will be taught during a 16-hour examination review course at Pellissippi State Technical Community College June 15-16.

The course is designed to prepare participants for the written examination for a Tennessee contractor’s license, a residential license, a commercial/industrial/residential license or a business and law license.

The instructor is Tom Dorsey, a licensed contractor. The course is Friday, June 15, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, June 16, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., in Room 206 of the Alexander Building on the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road.

Sponsored by the college’s Business and Community Services, the course will review Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements, contracts and sales agreements, contractor’s business law, child labor laws, worker’s compensation and other regulations.

Paperwork and construction requirements will be covered, as well as the fundamentals of mathematics used in the building trades; accounting, bonds and lien law; site work; framing and roofing; steel joists and trusses; and concrete and carpentry.

A hands-on approach to the proper use of the 2003 International Residential Code and 2003 International Building Code as they relate to industrial, commercial and residential installations also is included.

The course will cover the Residential Contractors, Residential/Small Commercial Contractors and Commercial/Industrial/Residential Contractors exams. Additional textbooks are required for all three topics, and texts can be used for taking the state exams. Texts can be purchased by calling (865) 777-1748 before or at the beginning of class.
