Pellissippi State awards scholarships to ‘The Line’ film festival winners

Pellissippi State Technical Community College recently presented scholarships to a five-member Central High School team that took “Best of the Fest” in “The Line” Student Audio Visual Festival and Awards Show.

The awards were announced at a January 25 ceremony following screening of the competing entries at two Regal Entertainment Group theaters at West Town Mall. The projects were judged in December by a panel of experts from the film and television industry.

The Pellissippi State Foundation rewarded each of the five members of the “Best of the Fest” team with a two-year scholarship that covers tuition and fees.

The winning group produced a documentary on the need for a safe skateboarding park in Knoxville. The film covers a park once used for skateboarding that has now been bulldozed.

“They presented the information in a point/counterpoint format,” said Ron Bellamy, program coordinator of Video Production Technology at Pellissippi State, “complete with good commentary without finger-pointing.”

VPT is one of four concentrations in the Media Technologies degree program at the college. The others are Communication Graphics Technology, Photography and Web Technology.

Twenty-one teams from 19 public, private and home-school middle and high school programs competed in “The Line.” The first-time event was hosted by the East Tennessee Television & Film Commission in conjunction with Knox County Schools and Regal Entertainment Group.

Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City and Watkins School of Art & Design and Watkins Film School in Nashville also presented awards.

The “Best of the Fest” students are allowed to use their scholarship earnings toward any degree program at Pellissippi State.

Students who choose to pursue a degree in Media Technologies will benefit from a state-of-the-art building—the Bagwell Center for Media and Art—now under construction on the Pellissippi Campus. The facility will be equipped with the latest technology and innovations in the media field.
