Pellissippi State offers fun, enriching Summer Camps for Kids

The local community college is opening its doors—not to mention its basketball and tennis courts and its theatrical stage—to children and teenagers with the annual Summer Camps for Kids.

Pellissippi State Technical Community College is offering a variety of camps beginning in June. Most are at the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road and last two to four hours each day.

New to this year’s Summer Camps for Kids: computer gaming, cyberspace and robotics. Introduction to Computer Programming Using Alice is offered July 16-18 (rising grades 8-12), and Introduction to Virtual Reality Using Second Life is July 24 (ages 12-16), July 25 (ages 16-20), and July 26 (ages 21 and older). Open Source Resources for Gaming is June 4 (ages 12 and older), and Introduction to Lego Mindstorm Programming is July 9 (ages 10 and older).

In sports and athletics, Pellissippi State will host its 11th annual Aaron Green Developmental Basketball Camp (ages 7-15), June 25-28; its 11th annual Little Aces Tennis Camp (ages 6-12), June 11-15 and July 9-13; its 11th annual Intermediate Tennis Camp (ages 10-16), June 18-22 and July 16-20; and its 10th annual Junior Golf Camp (ages 7-17), July 16-20.

Other sports camps: the seventh annual Junior Archery Camp (ages 10-15), June 4-8 and 18-22 and July 9-13 and 16-20; Beginning Volleyball Camp (ages 10-15), June 11-15; SCUBA PADI Seals, an introductory course in snorkeling and SCUBA diving for ages 8-12, June 18-22 and July 16-20; Bowling Camp (ages 10 and older), July 9-13; and Karate Camp (ages 6-16), June 4-8, 18-22, and July 9-13.

A daylong scuba camp, Voyages of Discovery: The Pirates, will be offered again this year for ages 8 and older, on July 23-27.

In arts and crafts, Pellissippi State will sponsor a morning and afternoon session of its seventh annual Art Camp (ages 8-15), July 23-27, and Photo-rrific, the digital photography class for ages 12 and older, June 25-28.

The popular ImaginACTion Drama Camp will teach children ages 9-13 acting, voice and movement July 23-27, and Dance and All That Jazz will incorporate acting and musical theatre as well as teach elements of ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance. Dance sessions for children ages 5 ½-7 are scheduled June 11-15 and for ages 8-12, June 18-22.

New this year are the mandolin and banjo classes. Kid-O’s Group Mandolin is offered June 4-8 for ages 8-13, and Banjo is offered June 11-15 for ages 8-13. Wizard (Magic) Camp (ages 10-15) runs June 4-8.

The college also will sponsor Enrichment Camps in such topics as keyboarding, mathematics, science, computer gaming, cyberspace, robotics and Microsoft Office Sampler.

Mathemagic is offered June 11-15 for rising third- through fifth-graders. World of Insects is scheduled June 18-22 for second- through fifth-graders. Keyboarding (ages 10 and older) is June 4-7 and 25-28, and Microsoft Office Sampler (ages 12 and older) is July 23-26.

Pellissippi State also is offering camps in life skills, such as I Can Cook! (ages 8-15), June 18-22, and July 23-27; Social Skills for Teens (ages 13-18), June 12-13, June 26-27, July 9-10, July 12-13, and July 16-17; and Mind Your Manners (ages 7-12) on the same dates.

Also available are six Cambridge ACT Test Prep PLUS sessions designed for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The pretest session is scheduled July 21, math and science sessions are scheduled July 30 and 31, and English and reading sessions are scheduled Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. A post-test session is set for Aug. 11.
