June 11, 2007 Robots, pirates, scuba … Pellissippi State’s Summer Camps offers them all!Don’t miss the fun! There’s still time to take advantage of Summer Camps for Kids at Pellissippi State Technical Community College. Upcoming camps include the following:Junior Archery Camp. Ages 10-15. $150. For girls and boys with or without experience in archery, this camp is designed for students to learn safety rules and basic archery techniques. The camp will focus on learning and developing shooting skills. Equipment is provided. Camp I: June 18-22. Camp II: July 9-13. Camp III: July 16-20. Camps meet 8:30-11 a.m. Aaron Green Developmental Basketball Camp for Girls and Boys. Ages 7-15. $99. A developmental camp that focuses on discipline, proper shooting form, basic skills of defense and offense, teamwork and other fundamentals of the game. Campers will be divided into groups based on age and ability. There will be a “hot shot,” “free throw,” and “gotcha” competition. June 25-28, 8-11 a.m. Little Aces Tennis Camp. Ages 6-12. $85. This camp will focus on hand-eye coordination, serves, backhand, forehand and other fundamental aspects of tennis. Participants will need to supply their own racket. July 9-13, 8:30-10 a.m. Intermediate Tennis Camp. Ages 10-16. $95. This camp is for students who can use the basic strokes. Participants will concentrate on improving basics such as strategies, hand-eye coordination, backhand, forehand and serve. Participants will need to supply their own racket. Camp I: June 18-22. Camp II: July 16-20. Both camps meet 8:30-10:30 a.m. Junior Golf Camp. Ages 7-17. $105. Camp focuses on the basics of swing progression, posture, stance and other fundamentals, including golf etiquette. Participants will need to supply their own clubs and golf balls. Golf shoes are not necessary. Includes a day on the driving range and a day on the golf course. July 16-20, 8:30-11 a.m. Scuba-PADI Seals. Ages 8-12. $149, with an additional $49 materials fee payable to the instructor. This camp is designed to introduce children to the world of snorkeling and scuba in a controlled pool environment. Campers will learn how to properly use snorkeling equipment and learn the basic practices and principles of scuba diving. Children must have basic swimming skills, and parents must sign a medical release form. Class is limited to eight. Camp I: June 18-22. Camp II: July 16-20. Both camps meet 9-noon. Voyages of Discovery: The Pirates. Ages 8 and older. $350. This all-day, weeklong scuba camp has a pirate theme, with an educational focus based mainly on National Geographic materials but also on other sources and movies. An added feature (additional charge) is an overnight stay at Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg that includes behind-the-scenes tours and focus on the pirate exhibit. July 23-27, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Bowling Camp. Ages 10 and older. $99. For avid bowlers as well as beginners. Participants will have fun bowling while learning such fundamentals as ball release, how to select equipment and how to keep score. Campers also will learn the correct approach, including the four-step in-hook ball delivery. July 9-13, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Art Camp. Ages 8-15. $109. This camp will focus on fine art skills for young artists. Campers will paint and do other awesome projects that may include basic drawing, figure drawing, proportion, calligraphy, pâpier maché, sculpture, plaster casting, color theory and/or perspective drawing. Camp I: July 23-27, 9-noon. Camp II: July 23-27, 1-4 p.m. Claymation Camp. Ages 8-15. $109. Learn the process that studios go through as they create claymation movies and cartoons such as “Wallace and Gromit” or “Chicken Run.” Participants work in groups, and each group will write a script, create clay figures and backgrounds, take photographs and finally compile into a short animated movie on a computer. Final project will be burned to a CD and viewed at a movie premiere on Friday afternoon. Camp I: July 16-20, 9-noon. Camp II: July 16-20, 1-4 p.m. I Can Cook. Ages 8-15. $99. Participants will prepare a different course each day, using regional themes from around the country. The class will provide hands-on cooking as well as information about recipes, measurements, etc. Participants will need to supply some basic items. Camp I: June 18-22, 9-noon. Camp II: June 18-22, 12:30-3:30 p.m. Camp III: July 23-27, 9-noon. Camp IV: July 23-27, 12:30-3:30 p.m. Photo-rrific Computer Camp. Ages 12 and older. $95. Manipulate your digital photographs on the computer, and combine them for a scrapbook or collage. Share your photos and create your own photo site. June 25-28, 1-4 p.m. World of Insects. Grades 2-5. $90. Explore the world of insects using the scientific method. Activities will include collecting and displaying insects, making an identification coloring book and much more. June 18-22, 9-11 a.m. Microsoft Office Sampler Computer Camp. Ages 12 and older. $95. Learn the basic tools for creating documents (Word), presentations (PowerPoint) and spreadsheets (Excel). Learn these valuable tools for creativity, homework assignments and for that future job! July 23-26, 1-4 p.m. Keyboarding. Ages 10 and older. $95. Typing can be fun? Learn to touch type the keyboard using fun and entertaining concepts. Emphasis is placed on correct finger reach to insure accuracy. June 25-28, 9 a.m.-noon. Introduction to Computer Programming Using Alice. Rising students grades 8-12 or prospective college students. $150. Students will be introduced to 3D program design and development using a popular object-oriented programming environment named Alice. Use a variety of programming controls to create animated objects. July 16 and 18, 9-noon. Introduction to Virtual Reality Using Second Life. $150. For anyone interested in learning the SL (Second Life) experience and what fun it can be. Students will be introduced to the virtual reality environment called Second Life. Use of on-screen controls, how to find interesting places and other easy-to-understand features will be presented. Camp I: Ages 12-16, July 24. Camp II: Ages 16-20, July 25. Camp III: Ages 21 and older, July 26. All classes meet 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Introduction to Lego Mindstorm Programming. Ages 10 and older. $150. This class is designed to introduce students to the visual programming language used on the Lego Mindstorm robots. Student groups will build and then program a robot created with the Lego Mindstorm kit. Students will learn a bit of the history of robotics and the basic building blocks of computer programs as well. July 9, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ImaginACTion. Ages 9-13. $110. This fun, active camp will focus on using imagination and technique to create characters for the stage. Through theatre games and exercises, students will explore and expand their abilities in all areas of acting. The week will culminate with a showcase of performances by all students. July 23-27, 1-4:30 p.m. Dance and All That Jazz. Ages 5 1/2-12. $105. If you love dancing, acting and musical theatre, this class is for you! This camp is designed for everyone from students with no training to dancers with some experience. You will be exposed to all forms of dance—ballet, tap, jazz and modern, as well as musical theatre and acting. June 18-22. 1-4 p.m. Mind Your Manners. Ages 7-12. $59. Boys and girls will build interpersonal skills. Write thank-you notes, learn to set a table for everyday as well as formal dining, and learn proper introductions and telephone manners. This class will boost confidence and help create a wonderful first impression. Class will conclude with a party to help put you at ease in social situations. Camp I: June 26-27. Camp II: July 9-10. Camp III: July 12-13. Camp IV: July 16-17. All classes meet 8-9:30 a.m. Social Skills for Teens. Ages 13-18. $59. Boys and girls will be guided through the rules of etiquette without stressing. Teens will socialize with classmates using hands-on training and leave with a renewed sense of confidence. Topics covered will include dining etiquette at home and out, social settings, banquets, dances, party manners, public speaking, wireless etiquette and food, dieting and exercise. Class will conclude with a party to help put participants at ease in a social situation. Camp I: June 26-27. Camp II: July 9-10. Camp III: July 12-13. Camp IV: July 16-17. All classes meet 10-11:30 a.m. Karate Camp. Ages 6-16. $90. Have fun learning the basic skills of karate. Learn about self-defense and physical fitness. Karate teaches discipline and respect for others and helps develop self-confidence and self-awareness. It can also be a positive influence on academic progress. Camp I: June 18-22. Camp II: July 9-13. All classes meet 9-11 a.m. Cambridge ACT Test Prep Plus. $250. Your ACT score will determine where you go to college, the dollar amount of your scholarship and possibly your future income level. This prep course for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors is a six-step approach to score improvement. Includes a diagnostic three-hour pretest; math and verbal remediation; effective test-taking methods for math, reading, English and science essay questions; general test strategies; multiple practice tests to reinforce test-taking strategies; a final diagnostic math and verbal exam; and review of problem areas.
