March 8, 2007 Pellissippi State hosts free performance of ‘A Woman Called Truth’Sandra Fenichel Asher’s play “A Woman Called Truth” will be performed at Pellissippi State Technical Community College’s Magnolia Avenue Campus as part of the college’s celebration of Women’s History Month. The performance will be in the Community Room March 12, 11:45 a.m.“A Woman Called Truth” is a 75-minute, one-act play about the life and achievements of Sojourner Truth, from slavery to freedom. The play begins at the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. The audience is then taken back to 1797, the heroine’s year of birth, when Truth begins to recount some of the extraordinary experiences that shaped her life. The audience gets a glimpse of the cruel treatment she suffered as a slave, as well as witnesses her bravery as she took her freedom and fought to free her son. At the end of the play, the audience learns how Isabella Baumfree became Sojourner Truth and gets a taste of her dynamic spirit as an orator, when she delivers her famous “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech. Truth was also a powerful singer, and during the performance she and other characters sing several spiritual and secular slave songs. The WordPlayers, a Knoxville troupe of Christian performing artists, will deliver “A Woman Called Truth.” The acting group began in 1995 and performs a variety of plays. This summer, the group is planning a performance of C. S. Lewis’ “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” For more information about the play, contact Rosalyn Tillman at (865) 329-3101 or rtillman@pstcc.edu.
