Pellissippi State offers fun, educational camps in July

“Mom, I’m bored!” If that’s become the common refrain in your house this summer, Pellissippi State Technical Community College is here with the solution: exciting and entertaining Summer Camps for Kids, offered throughout July.

Pellissippi State has camps for ages 5-17 that are sure to please. Most are at the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road. Here’s what’s coming up:

Scuba Rangers is designed to introduce children 8-12 to the adventurous world of snorkeling and scuba in a controlled pool environment. The class will build self-confidence and self-esteem while students learn the proper use of snorkeling equipment and the basic practices and principles of scuba diving. Mask, fins and snorkel are required, and they can be purchased or rented from Ski/Scuba Center. Children must have basic swimming skills, and parents must sign a medical release form. The cost is $149, with an additional $49 materials fee payable to the instructor. Class is limited to eight participants. It meets Monday-Friday, July 21-25, 9 a.m.-noon at Ski/Scuba Center.

Developmental Basketball Camp for Girls and Boys is for ages 7-15. The camp will focus on discipline, proper shooting form, basic defense and offense skills, teamwork and other fundamentals of the game. Campers will be divided into groups based on age and ability. There will be a hot-shot, free-throw and gotcha competition. Camp will take place at the Student Recreation Center Monday-Thursday, July 21-24, 8-11 a.m. The cost is $99.

Little Aces Tennis Camp is specially designed for ages 6-12. This camp will cover hand-eye coordination, serves, backhand, forehand and other basics of tennis. Participants supply their own racquet. Camp is Monday-Friday, July 7-11, 8:30-10 a.m. on the outdoor courts of the Student Recreation Center.

Intermediate Tennis Camp is for ages 10-16. The camp is for students who already can use the basic strokes. Participants will concentrate on improving basics, such as strategies, hand-eye coordination, backhand, forehand and serve. Participants supply their own racquet. Camp is on the outdoor courts of the Student Recreation Center Monday-Friday, July 14-18, from 8-10 a.m. The cost is $95.

Junior Golf Camp for Ages 7-17 will focus on the basics of swing progression, posture, stance and other fundamentals, including golf etiquette. Student will have fun using their acquired skills one day at a driving range and one day at a golf course. Participants supply their own clubs and balls, but golf shoes are not necessary. This camp meets Monday-Friday, July 21-25, 8:30-11 a.m. at the Student Recreation Center. The cost is $125.

Junior Archery Camp is designed for girls and boys 10-15, with or without experience in archery. Students will learn safety rules and basic archery techniques. The camp will focus on learning and developing shooting skills by playing such archery games as popping balloons. Equipment is provided. This camp is limited to 12 and will be taught by an NAA certified Level IV coach. The camp meets at the Student Recreation Center Monday-Friday, July 14-18, 8:30-11 a.m. The cost is $150.

Karate Camp is available for all children ages 5 and up. Karate is not only a good source of cardio fitness and physical strength; it also develops self-confidence, self-discipline, honor, respect and loyalty. The camp will begin with basic techniques and ground work and move into kickboxing and jujitsu. The camp will take place at the Student Recreation Center Monday-Friday, July 7-11, 9-11 a.m. The cost is $90.

Bowling Camp combines fun and learning for children ages 10 and older. Participants will learn bowling fundamentals: the correct approach, ball release, selecting equipment and score keeping. The classes will take place at Family Bowl Monday-Friday, July 14-18, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and the cost is $99.

Junior Jazzercise shows children that exercise is as fun as it is important. Jazzercise teaches coordination, strength and endurance, nutrition and the importance of physical fitness. Students will learn cardio exercise, games, kickboxing and strength training. Parents are invited to a dance performance at the end of the week. Participants need to bring a water bottle, ball and hula-hoop. The class costs $90 and is for children ages 6-14. Students will meet Monday-Friday, July 14-18, 9-11 a.m.

ImaginACTion focuses on using imagination and technique to create characters for the stage. Students will explore and expand their acting abilities with theatre games and exercises. At the end of the week, the students will perform. Students ages 10-13 are invited to attend the camp, which takes place Monday-Friday, July 7-11, 1-4:30 p.m. The fee is $110.

Social Skills for Teens Ages 13-18 and Mind Your Manners for Kids Ages 7-12. Boys, girls and teens will build self-confidence, meet new friends and learn how to create a good first impression in these age-targeted camps. The two courses will cover social etiquette involving introductions, conversation, telephone manners, thank-you notes and more. Older students will master the intricacies of knowing which fork to use, and younger ones will learn to set a table correctly. Class concludes with a party to help put participants at ease in a social situation. The camps are both offered July 7-8, 10-11 and 22-23. Call (865) 539-7167 or 539-7166 for times. The cost for each camp is $59.

Art Camp, for children ages 8-15, will focus on fine arts skills for young artists. Students will work on a variety of things that may include basic and figure drawing, proportion, calligraphy, paper making, sculpture, book and journal making, color theory and perspective drawing. The camp runs Monday-Friday, July 7-11 and 14-18, 9-noon, and the cost is $109.

Microsoft Office Sampler teaches the basic tools for creating documents (Word), presentations (PowerPoint) and spreadsheets (Excel). These tools will help with fun projects, homework and for that future job. The class is for students 12 and up and costs $99. The camp is Monday-Thursday, July 14-17, 1-4 p.m.

Keyboarding Camp teaches that typing can be fun! Students will learn to type using entertaining concepts. The class will focus on correct finger placement to ensure accuracy. The class is $99 and is for children ages 10 and up. It’s offered Monday-Thursday, July 14-17, 9-noon.

Introduction to Computer Programming Using Alice. This hands-on class introduces students grades 7-12 to 3D program design and development using the object-oriented programming environment Alice. Students will learn to create animated objects and will be shown how to download this free software for use at home. The class costs $150 and is Monday and Wednesday, July 14 and 16, 9-noon.

Introduction to Lego Mindstorm Programming introduces students ages 10 and up to the visual programming language used to develop the Lego Mindstorm robots. The class will be divided into groups, with each group building and programming a robot. Only 10 spots are available. The class meets Monday, July 21, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The fee is $150.

Science America will satisfy youngsters’ curiosity and provide excitement and fun while they learn to become scientists. Children grades 5 and up will learn how to use a variety of scientific equipment and numerical formulas to conduct experiments. Participants will race remote-controlled vehicles and learn how to modify them to make the cars faster, explore the fascinating world of the aquatic ecosystem and visualize how mathematical and life science can be used to unlock the secrets of the unknown. The class costs $199 and takes place Monday-Friday, July 14-18, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The Cambridge ACT Test Prep course for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors is a six-step approach to score improvement. The course includes a diagnostic three-hour pretest; math and verbal remediation; effective test-taking methods for math, reading, English and science essay questions; general test-taking strategies and multiple practice tests; a diagnostic math and verbal exam; and a review of problem areas. The class costs $250, which includes student manual, pre- and post-tests with assessment scores and a take-home practice test. The pretest is Saturday, July 12, 8:30-noon. Math and science is Monday and Tuesday, July 21 and 22, 5-8:30 p.m. English and Reading is Monday and Tuesday, July 28-29, 5-8:30 p.m. The post-test will take place Saturday, Aug. 2, 8:30-noon.
