March 12, 2008 Pellissippi State president presented Phi Theta Kappa award Allen Edwards, president of Pellissippi State Technical Community College, has been selected to receive Phi Theta Kappa honor society’s Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction. The annual award is given to college presidents based on their support of PTK, the international honor society of two-year colleges. Edwards will be recognized April 5 at the 90 th Annual International Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. An awards dinner will take place on April 4 for the recipients. Convention keynote speakers Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent, and James Rubin, former assistant secretary of state, will be guest speakers at the dinner. Award winners will have the opportunity to meet with Amanpour and Rubin. “If there’s something we need, we know that we have a friend in Dr. Edwards,” said Carol O’Farrell, associate English professor and faculty advisor for PTK at Pellissippi State. President Edwards shows his support by coming to events, providing office space for the group and helping with fundraising, O’Farrell says. Last year, when the group was raising money to send members to the international convention in Nashville, Edwards agreed to match any money raised by the organization. This year, the school made a donation to help send more members to Philadelphia for the convention. “I am honored to receive such a prestigious award from Phi Theta Kappa. I look forward to continuing my support of the organization here at Pellissippi State,” Edwards said. For more information on Phi Theta Kappa, visit www.ptk.org.
