Introduction to Computer Programming Using Alice

This two-day hands-on class introduces students to 3-D program design and development using a popular object-oriented programming environment named Alice. Students will use a variety of programming controls to create animated objects and will be shown how to download this free software for use at home.

Introduction to Lego Mindstorm Programming

Ages 10 and up/Fee: $150

This class is designed to introduce students to the visual programming language used to program the Lego Mindstorm robots. Students will be divided into two groups, with each group building and then programming a robot created with the Lego Mindstorm kit. Participants will learn a bit of the history of robotics, how to use Lego Mindstorms to create robots, the basic building blocks of computer programs and how to program the Lego Mindstorms using Lego’s visual programming language. CREATIVE ARTS

Art Camp

Ages 8-15/Fee: $109

This class will focus on fine arts skills for young artists. Students will paint, draw and do many fun projects. Activities may include basic drawing, figure drawing, proportion, calligraphy, paper making, sculpture, book and journal making, color theory and/or perspective drawing, depending on the interests of the class.

Claymation Camp

Ages 8-15/Fee $109

Learn the process that studios go through as they create “claymation” movies and cartoons such as “Wallace and Gromit” and “Chicken Run.” Participants work in groups. Each group will write a script, create clay figures and backgrounds, take photographs and finally compile into short animated movies on a computer. Final project will be burned to a CD and viewed at a movie premiere on Friday afternoon.

Social Skills for Teens

Ages 13-18/ Fee: $59

Participants will be guided through the rules of etiquette without stressing. In this three-hour class, teens will socialize with classmates using hands-on training and leave with a renewed sense of confidence. This process will better prepare participants for life’s unexpected and awkward situations. Topics covered include (1) dining etiquette in the home and out; (2) social settings, banquets, dances, party manners, public speaking; (3) wireless etiquette; and (4) food, dieting, and exercise.

Mind Your Manners

This class will provide hands-on training to build interpersonal skills. Wizard Camp

Ages 10-18/Fee $135

Amaze your family and friends with magic tricks! This course is a beginner/intermediate course in the art of magic, in which students learn how to perform magic in front of an audience using sleight-of-hand techniques, speech patter and timing misdirection skills. Students will use basic magic tricks to practice and perform with, as well as do magic with ordinary objects such as cards, coins and rope. On the last day of camp students will perform a 10-minute magic show for their peers.

Cambridge ACT Test Prep

Fee: $250 (includes student manual, pre- and post-tests with assessment scores, take-home practice tests)

Your ACT score will determine where you will go to college, the dollar amount of your scholarship and your future income level. The Cambridge Test Prep course for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors is a six-step approach to score improvement. The course includes a diagnostic three-hour pretest; math and verbal remediation; effective test-taking methods for math, reading, English, and science essay questions; general test strategies; multiple practice tests to reinforce test-taking strategies; a final diagnostic math and verbal exam; and review of problem areas.

Our scientists will enjoy five fun-filled days of experimentation that enhance their ability to perform science and math in a team setting. Knowledge of the scientific method will be increased through a series of hands-on activities as you modify and race remote-controlled vehicles to test efficiency. Explore the fascinating world of the aquatic ecosystem, and visualize how mathematical and life science can be used to unlock the secrets of the unknown. By the end of the week, you will be shouting, “I am a scientist!!!” if you have a curious nature and a desire for knowledge.

Bug Magic

Students will magically choose a bug book and a bug puppet that match! Ants tunnel out a prediction message! Bees fly out of the hive with a volunteer’s selected flower! A tarantula finds its missing mate! Bees and a jar of honey are produced from an empty hive! Invisible fireflies are collected and turned into a light bulb! Butterflies appear in an empty net! Plus bug jokes, gags and much more. Students will learn several facts about insects while having fun learning with a magic theme.

Adventure Into the Digital Science Classroom—Crayfish, Frogs and Sharks, OH MY!!!

Grades 5-8/Fee: $100

This is a class for the not-so-faint! The class will start with virtual dissections of the crayfish, frog, shark and fetal pig. The students will then do actual dissections using forensic techniques.

The CSI Experience

Grades 5-8/Fee: $100

Learn simple forensic techniques and use these techniques to solve a mock crime. Lab activities will include blood typing with simulated blood, fingerprinting and analysis, preparing a slide of your cheek cells, extracting DNA, and using a microscope/dissecting scope to analyze hair, skin, and fingerprint and cheek cells.

Developmental Basketball Camp for Girls and Boys

Join us for a developmental basketball camp that focuses on discipline, proper shooting form, basic skills of defense and offense, teamwork and other fundamentals of the game. Campers will be divided into groups based on age and ability. There will be a hot shot, free throw and gotcha competition. Join us and put the “FUN” in FUNdamentals.

This camp will focus on the basics of swing progression, posture, stance and other fundamentals, including golf etiquette. Have fun and use acquired skills one day at a driving range and one day at a golf course. Participants will need to supply their own clubs and balls. Golf shoes are not necessary.

Junior Archery Camp

This camp is for girls and boys with or without experience in archery. The camp is designed for students to learn safety rules and basic archery techniques. Students will focus on learning and developing shooting skills by playing archery games such as popping balloons and others. Equipment is provided. Camps are limited to 12 participants.

Karate Camp

Children and teens will enjoy this adventure-filled camp and be introduced to karate. This lifelong sport builds cardio-fitness and physical strength. Karate training not only develops self-confidence but also instills character qualities like self-discipline, honor, respect and loyalty—and can have a positive influence on academic progress. Class will include basic techniques and groundwork, as well as some kickboxing and jujitsu. By the end of the week, students will be equipped with valuable self-defense strategies and skills.

Scuba PADI Seals

This camp is designed to introduce children to the world of snorkeling and scuba in a controlled pool environment. The class is designed to build self-confidence and self-esteem while having fun. Students will learn proper use of snorkeling equipment and the basic practices and principles of scuba diving. Children must have basic swimming skills, and parents must sign a medical release form. Class is limited to eight participants.

Voyages of Discovery: The Pirates

Ages 8+/Fee: $350

This all-day, weeklong scuba camp has a pirates’ theme with an educational focus based mainly on National Geographic materials as well as other sources and movies of the period. A complete list of movies will be available on request. We strive to use older movies that do not include the graphic violence of movies of today. An added feature (additional charge) will include an overnight stay at Ripley’s Aquarium in Gatlinburg that provides behind-the-scenes tours and focuses on the pirate exhibit.

Bowling Camp

Junior Jazzercise

Ages 6-14/Fee: $90

The strong exercise habits kids develop now can go a long way in shaping their future. That’s why Junior Jazzercise teaches things like coordination, strength and endurance, nutrition and the importance of physical fitness. This dance aerobics class focuses on fun and fitness, not performance and perfection. Included in the class will be cardio-exercise, games, kickboxing and strength training. Parents are invited to a dance performance at the end of the week. Students need to bring a water bottle, a ball and a hula hoop.
