March 28, 2008 Student design portfolios on display at Pellissippi State’s Bagwell Center The Student Design Showcase at Pellissippi State Technical Community College—it’s where art and technology converge. The annual exhibit of students’ visual communications creations, the showcase is set for April 24 at the Pellissippi Campus on Hardin Valley Road. The computer-designed artwork will be on display in the gallery and first-floor hallways of the new Bagwell Center for Media and Art. Sponsored by Communication Graphics Technology, a concentration of the college’s Media Technologies associate’s degree program, the event will feature the portfolios of 18 CGT students. Students will show 10 to 20 examples of the best work they’ve compiled over two years, along with self-promotional items produced specifically for the showcase. The event is aimed at graphic design professionals and others interested in the design industry, but the public is invited to attend the 4-8 p.m. free showing as well. This year’s theme is “It’s in the Bag.” The theme is a double entendre. It refers to the portfolio case that is part of the design used in the promotional materials, and it’s an abbreviated name for the Bagwell Center, says David Gilbert, associate professor and CGT program coordinator. “This is an excellent opportunity for students and CGT to meet and be critiqued by individuals who specialize in advertising, digital graphic design, computer illustration, information graphics, desktop publishing, and other creative areas of visual communications,” said Gilbert. The portfolios are the original work of 18 candidates for the Associate of Applied Science degree. Most of them are actively seeking employment upon graduation this spring. “Pellissippi State offers the finest teaching facility for graphic design in East Tennessee, perhaps in the Southeast,” said Gilbert. “We have an excellent placement rate, with 92 to 100 percent of graduates who entered the workplace directly during the past four years finding jobs in their field. “Our students are prepared to enter the workforce when they get their degrees and quickly land jobs with advertising agencies, design consulting firms, media outlets, Web design firms, printing companies or in-house agencies.” For more information about the CGT program or the Student Design Showcase, contact Gilbert at (865) 694-6750 or dgilbert@pstcc.edu.
