Adult Education Program earns award for excellence

The Adult Education Program has received the 2003 Commitment Award from the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence (TNCPE). TNCPE selected Pellissippi State's program for its use of the national Baldrige quality criteria for continuous improvement toward providing excellence in its services.

The Adult Education Program will be recognized at the 11th annual TNCPE Awards Banquet on February 23 in Nashville. The program was judged using the Criteria for Performance Excellence established by the Baldrige National Quality Program. Recognition is given in one of four categories: Quality Interest—the beginning level, Commitment Award, Achievement Award and Excellence Award—the highest level.

Pellissippi State shares this year's Commitment Award with 14 other Tennessee businesses.

“The Baldrige Quality process has had a tremendous impact on our program,” said Joan Newman, director of the Learning and Testing Center, “and we are dedicated to becoming the best learner-centered, progressive adult education program that we can be. Receiving the Tennessee Quality Award for Commitment is an honor that confirms that we are on the right path.”

The Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act, signed into law in 1987, is named for the late Secretary of State Malcolm Baldrige, whose managerial excellence contributed to long-term improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of government. TNCPE was established in 1993 to promote the understanding and use of the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. The nonprofit organization is governed by a board drawn from manufacturing, service, health care, education and government.

The Tennessee recognition program is open to all businesses as well as public and private educational institutions, health-care organizations, government agencies, and other nonprofit entities.
