FLAG Center now open

College students who need a course in developmental mathematics now have an alternative that makes it easier to accommodate work and family.

Pellissippi State's FLAG Center (Flexible Learning for Achievement and Growth) opened for operation this spring semester. “This alternative instructional program offers computer-based instruction in developmental mathematics. It is designed to help students who need a flexible schedule,” said FLAG Center coordinator Caroline Best.

“Students learn by individualized, self-paced instruction with the support of computer software. Professional tutors are also available, and academic counselors can help with educational planning and goal setting.”

Students who are interested in the program need to be independent, self-motivated learners who have had algebra in high school, according to Best.

Students accepted into the FLAG program attend class at the center three hours a week for 15 weeks or until they complete the course. As with a more traditional class, student homework and outside study are required.

Prospective students must submit an application and attend an interview. Best says the center assesses the students' current skill levels and deficiencies to be sure of a good fit. Participants who begin the semester in a regular section of developmental math may be able to change to a flexible section if their work schedules change or family issues interfere with traditional attendance. The program also offers flexible starting dates.

“From our instructional approach to our scheduling,” said Best, “we're trying to provide the flexibility that today's students need to learn and get ahead.”

The program is open to new and returning students at Pellissippi State. The center will initially offer sections of DSPM 0800 (Elementary Algebra) and DSPM 0850 (Intermediate Algebra).
