Historian leads off Black History Month events

Bobby L. Lovett, professor of history at Tennessee State University (TSU) and noted state historian, will lead off the College’s Black History Month celebration with a presentation on the life of Tennessee’s African-Americans from 1780 until the present, from slavery to freedom.

Lovett will speak on February 1 at 12:15 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center and again at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Avenue Campus.

Lovett, a native of Memphis, has a doctorate in American history from the University of Arkansas. His research focus was on African-American history.

Lovett has been at TSU since 1973. In addition to his teaching, he has held a number of administrative positions there, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1988 to 2000.

Lovett has written two books, “The African-American History of Nashville, Tennessee, 1780-1930: Elites and Dilemmas” and “The Civil Rights Movement in Tennessee: A Narrative History.” He has also written a number of scholarly articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries and book reviews in professional history journals. He is married and has five children.

The presentation is free and open to the public.
