College hosts Future Teachers Conference
February 24

High school and college students who are interested in becoming teachers and teachers who are early in their career are invited to attend the one-day Future Teachers Conference on the Pellissippi Campus February 24.

The conference is 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and registration begins at 8:30.

Rhonda “Nikki” Barnes is the keynote speaker. Barnes has 12 years of classroom experience and is a senior liaison for Minority Community Outreach with the National Education Association.

Barnes will lead an interactive discussion about “accomplished teaching”—what it is, what it isn’t and how to do it year after year.

Various sessions will be available for participants to choose from, on topics ranging from the first-year experience to classroom management.

For future teachers, the conference offers “New Teacher Tips,” a session on getting ready for interviews and preparing a portfolio and resume. Another session, “Navigating Your First Year,” covers potential problems first-year teachers face and provides information on how to overcome those obstacles. Topics in the session include “You and Your Students,” “Planning,” “Taking Care of You” and “Taking Care of Your Career.”

Other highlights of the event: “Classroom Management 101,” “Technology Savvy: Bring the World to Your Classroom,” “Invention Activities That Meet Tennessee Science Standards” and “Poetry Isn’t Just for Language Arts Class.”

The conference is limited to the first 200 people who register. Lunch is included in the $20 registration fee.

To learn more or register for the conference, contact Meg Moss at 694-6673 or mvmoss@pstcc.edu. The registration form is available at www.pstcc.edu/departments/edu.
