Second 'Future Teachers Conference' scheduled April 16 at Pellissippi State

So that no new teacher will be left behind, Pellissippi State will sponsor its second annual Future Teachers Conference April 16 at the main campus.

Aimed at older high school students, college students and young teachers early in their career, the one-day conference will explore a variety of topics ranging from teaching sciences and guided reading to managing a classroom to using calculators.

Lana Seivers, Tennessee's commissioner of education, will be the keynote speaker, and one of the principal guest speakers will be Stuart Moskowitz of Humboldt State University in California, who will talk about teaching with new hand-held technology. Local teachers and principals, as well as faculty members from area universities, will be among the other speakers.

New this year will be sessions on social studies, multicultural classrooms, and the impact of politics on teachers and the teaching profession. Sessions on the No Child Left Behind program and literature for adolescents also are on the program. Those participating can attend as many as five sessions throughout the day, as well as the main keynote address.

The sessions are geared mainly for people teaching or interested in teaching kindergarten through eighth grade.

The 2005 conference will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For those who register by February 28, the fee is $30; for those who register later, the fee is $40. The conference is limited to the first 200 people who register. Continental breakfast and lunch are included in the registration fee, as are copies of all conference handouts, and some vendors will be present representing educational materials and resource firms.

For more information or to register for the conference, contact Meg Moss, education program coordinator at Pellissippi State, at 694-6673 or mvmoss@pstcc.edu. The registration form can be found at www.pstcc.edu/departments/edu.
