Pellissippi State, Tennessee Wesleyan join forces to plug nursing shortage

Pellissippi State and Tennessee Wesleyan College hope that a new partnership will encourage more students to pursue careers in health care and help alleviate the current shortage of qualified nurses.

The colleges' presidents signed an agreement February 3 that will allow students of Pellissippi State who have completed the general associate's degree to transfer into the Tennessee Wesleyan College Fort Sanders Nursing Program with junior status and complete their Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The nursing program is at Tennessee Wesleyan's Knoxville campus.

"Our Fort Sanders nursing program welcomes Pellissippi State's graduates," said Floyd Falany, president of Tennessee Wesleyan. "They will enter the program with a strong educational foundation and will be prepared to begin upper-level nursing courses and clinical experiences."

Dr. Allen Edwards, president of Pellissippi State, said the new partnership should prove beneficial to students at the community college.

"This agreement provides another opportunity for our students to make the transition into top-level, four-year degree programs at colleges and universities in the region," he said.

Tennessee Wesleyan College, founded in Athens in 1857, is a four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church.
