Drama students perform ‘Vagina Monologues’

Drama students will perform “The Vagina Monologues” Thursday, February 28.

The public is invited to attend the free performance, which takes place in the Goins Auditorium beginning at 8 p.m.

The students will perform a staged reading of Eve Ensler’s 1996 play. Ensler conducted interviews with 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence against women.

“This will be a benefit performance for V-Day,” said Charles Miller, associate professor of Theatre at Pellissippi State. “All proceeds will be donated to a local women’s shelter.”

In 1998, Ensler launched V-Day, a global nonprofit organization that has raised over $50 million dollars for local anti-violence groups through benefits from “The Vagina Monologues.”

The “V” in V-Day stands for valentine, vagina and victory. The group’s goal is to stop violence against women and girls. Proceeds from performances go to programs such as crisis centers and women’s shelters that work toward that goal.

The play is made up of a varying number of monologues and has been performed around the world.
