Inside Pellissippi

Employee Profile

Name: Tamela Wheeler

Title: Adult Education Instructor, ESOL Assistant Coordinator.

Major responsibilities: Teach adult education and coordinate ESOL program.

Length of service at the College: 5 1/2 years.

Place of birth: Knoxville.

Family members: Husband David; sons Aaron, 20, and Andy, 6; and our dog Mattie.

Something no one knows about you: For years I worked as a probation officer and worked in homicide. I also secretly want “Martha’s” job.

Greatest achievement or proudest moment: The birth of my children.

Favorite things outside work: I write children’s books on social-international-tolerance issues, and I have a book currently being looked at in New York. I am also a Temari (Japanese thread ball) artist and fiber design artist. I collect yellowware and garden, garden, garden, particularly daylilies.

Most rewarding part of your job: My students, particularly my international students. Every day I am opened up to the world through them.

Greatest unfulfilled ambition: I want to be a published children’s author and visit Alaska and Ireland. I’d also like to have my own art gallery with international artists.

Favorite quote: “Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.” E.L. Doctorow.
