Inside Pellissippi

Women’s History Month activities planned throughout March

A film about the American suffragette movement, a concert by Knoxville singer-songwriter Maggie Longmire and a student essay contest are among the highlights of the Women’s History Month observance at Pellissippi State.

“Iron-Jawed Angels,” a film about women's seeking the right to vote in the United States, will be shown March 22 at 12:15 p.m. and March 23 at 2 p.m. in the Goins Auditorium.

Maggie Longmire, who has been named Knoxville’s best local musician in a reader poll in Metro Pulse, will sing about women who have influenced her. She will perform March 29 at noon in the Goins Student Lounge.

The student essay contest seeks the best 750-word essay about a woman who has been a wise influence on a person’s life. Entries are due March 25, and winners will be recognized March 31 in the Student Lounge. Cash prizes will be awarded for the three best essays: $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

Among other activities scheduled at the Pellissippi Campus during March:

*A remembrance wall with the theme “From Silence to Song” will be set up in the Goins Student Lounge throughout the month for students and others to share a memento, poem, picture or story about an inspirational or influential woman.

*Information on the use of herbs and botanicals for healthy skin will be given by aesthetician Jacqueline Peek March 22, 10:45 a.m., in Alexander 254, and information on tai chi healing will be given by Jane Wilson March 23 at 12:30 p.m. in the Goins Student Lounge.

*A health fair, operated by Covenant Health, will take place March 24 in the Student Lounge.

*Poetry by women poets will be read March 18 at noon in the Student Lounge.

At the Division Street Campus, a remembrance wall will be set up throughout the month. Also, a collection of responses to the “gender gap” controversy surrounding Dr. Lawrence H. Summers, president of Harvard University, will be posted March 30 as “Wise Women in Academe.” The materials will focus on Summers’ statements on possible gender-linked differences affecting aptitude in math and science.
