Video production students’ work showcased in Bagwell gallery

Pellissippi State will showcase the work of its Video Production Technology students March 18-20. The event will take place in the new gallery of the Bagwell Center for Media and Art. The videos air 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The videos focus on such topics as sports, local history, the Sunsphere, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the haunting of Baker Peters Jazz Club on Kingston Pike and the former Spicy’s in the Old City, area bands and the University of Tennessee’s garden.

Shorter pieces, called “ViewPoinTs,” will be interspersed with the longer ones. ViewPoinTs are typically about 90 seconds, says Ella Ruggles, assistant professor of VPT, and they focus on a personal story.

Video Production Technology is one of four concentrations in the Media Technologies associate’s degree program. The other concentrations are Communication Graphics Technology, Photography and Web Technology.

Ruggles says she hopes the showcase will introduce the community to the many options a degree in Media Technologies offers. The VPT faculty is inviting all local high schools so that students can not only watch the videos but also tour the new Bagwell Center.

Included in the tour will be a visit to the new high-definition studio, which began operating this semester. Pellissippi State is the only school in the state that has an HD studio.

“I think it’s a good way to introduce students to VPT,” said Katie Lovette, a graduate and current adjunct faculty member.

More than 20 VPT students will show their work at the event. The videos were selected by Ruggles from various class projects over the past two semesters. Six hours of footage will be available for viewing.

Guests are welcome to come and go as they please in order to see as many of the videos as possible. Faculty will be available to answer questions about the showcase, VPT, Media Technologies and the Bagwell Center.

“We are looking forward to the community coming in and learning about our new facility,” Ruggles said.

The event is open to the public and is free of charge.
