Pellissippi State hosts regional middle school math competition
April 8
Square roots, integers, fractions and multipliers by the dozens
will be the order of the day April 8, as middle schoolers who
know their numbers participate in the fourth annual Tennessee
Middle School Mathematics Competition.
The event is scheduled at Pellissippi State from 8 a.m. to 1:30
p.m.
The competition is designed for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade
students who excel in mathematics. Contestants should compete
at their grade level and not the grade level of the math class
in which they are enrolled. Those who participate will be able
to see how their math ability compares to other local students.
The contest is a multiple-choice exam designed by college professors
throughout Tennessee. Students will be permitted to use calculators,
including graphing calculators, on the exams.
Trophies will be awarded to the top five students at each grade
level.
In addition to Pellissippi State, the math departments of Austin
Peay State University, Middle Tennessee State University, the
University of Memphis, the University of Tennessee at Martin,
Walters State Community College and Chattanooga State Community
College are sponsoring the event.
All students excelling in math from the East Tennessee region
are encouraged to compete. Registration and beginning instructions
will take place at the Performing Arts Center, beginning at 8
a.m.
The contest is scheduled 9-10 a.m., and the film “October
Sky” will be shown at 10:15 a.m. The Pellissippi State Foundation
is sponsoring a picnic lunch, and awards will be presented at
1 p.m.
Schools must limit the number of students at any level to a maximum
of 10 percent of grade-level enrollment or up to 20 students.
To be eligible for the team competition, each school must bring
at least four students at each grade level.
