Second 'Future Teachers Conference' scheduled April 16

Lana Seivers, Tennessee's commissioner of education, will be the keynote speaker at Pellissippi State's second annual Future Teachers Conference April 16.

Aimed at older high school students, college students and teachers early in their career, the one-day conference will explore a variety of topics ranging from teaching sciences and guided reading to managing a classroom to using a calculator. The sessions are geared mainly for people interested in teaching kindergarten through eighth grade.

New this year will be sessions on social studies, multicultural classrooms, and the impact of politics on teachers and the teaching profession. Sessions on the No Child Left Behind program and literature for adolescents also are on the program. One of the principal guest speakers, Stuart Moskowitz of Humboldt State University in California, will talk about teaching with new handheld technology.

Fewer than 50 spaces remain for participants in the conference, which is scheduled 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Seivers will speak at 8:15 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
