Students awarded for their creative writingThree budding student writers from Pellissippi State have been named winners in this year's creative writing competition sponsored by the Pellissippi State Foundation, Writer-in-Residence Edward Francisco and the English Department.Elizabeth Gallenberg won the George Scarborough Award for Structured Verse; Holly Ragland, a graduate of Bearden High School in Knoxville, received the Jeff Daniel Marion Award for Free Verse; and Tiffany Ham, a graduate of Heritage High School in Blount County, received the James Agee Award for Short Fiction. Each of the students will receive $100 from the Foundation, and their works will be published in the upcoming issue of the college's annual student publication, “Pellissippi Footnotes: A Collection of Creative Expressions.” The students will receive recognition and will be presented with their awards during the “Celebration of Poetry and Poets” event April 14 from noon-1:30 p.m. in the Goins Auditorium. The event will feature five well-known poets who will read from their works. The two student award-winners who wrote poems will also read their works at the event.
The competition and the April 14 event are both held in honor of this month's National Poetry Month. Organizers say the event will bring together the student writers and the poets for whom the poetry awards were named, as well as three other celebrated poets.
