Five
nationally renowned poets visit campus
Five
nationally renowned poets from Tennessee will be featured
at “A Celebration of Poetry and Poets,” a
reading and book signing in honor of April’s National
Poetry Month, at Pellissippi State.
The event, which is part of the college’s Spring
Writer’s Series, will be held April 14 at noon in
the Goins Auditorium. It is sponsored by the college’s
writer-in-residence, Edward Francisco, and the English
Department.

awarded for their creative writing
Three
budding student writers from Pellissippi State have been
named winners in this year’s creative writing competition
sponsored by the Pellissippi State Foundation, Writer-in-Residence
Edward Francisco and the English Department.

Foundation
sets Artique fundraiser
Knox
County Mayor Mike Ragsdale and his wife, Claudia, will
host this year’s annual Artique, a fine arts and
antique auction to benefit the Pellissippi State Foundation.
Individual tickets and tables are available now for the
black-tie-optional event, which begins at 7 p.m. on May
15 at the Knoxville Marriott Hotel.

New
non-credit course on edible wild plants is offered
Discover the wide range of edible wild
plants found in fields and woods, on roadsides and in
your own backyard. Pellissippi State is offering a new
non-credit course, “Exploring Wild Edible Plants,”
on April 17, 10-1 p.m. The class will take a field trip
to identify plants that can be used to spice up recipes.
Participants will also have the opportunity to taste some
prepared foods that use wild plants.

State will honor its outstanding students at the 2004
Academic and Student Leadership Awards April 29 at 6 p.m.

Pellissippi
State to graduate 593
Approximately
593 graduates are expected to receive diplomas during
commencement for Pellissippi State Sunday, May 16. The
ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in Thompson-Boling Arena on
the UT campus. Edward Francisco, a writer, editor and
associate professor of English at Pellissippi State, will
be the commencement speaker.

Jazz
Band and Guitar Ensemble perform
Two
popular student musical groups will offer an evening of
jazz and guitar music to round out the college’s
spring semester performances. The Jazz Band and Guitar
Ensemble will perform April 20 at 8 p.m. in the Performing
Arts Center.

Renowned
jazz pianist to hold open rehearsal/clinic
Internationally
renowned jazz pianist Donald Brown will hold an open rehearsal/clinic
April 20 from 3:30-4:45 p.m. at Pellissippi State. Brown
will also give a preview of his performance scheduled
for 8 p.m., in which he will share the stage with the
college’s Jazz Band and Guitar Ensemble.

Middle
school students are encouraged to participate in math
bowl
Middle
school students from East Tennessee who excel in math
are invited to participate in the Third Annual Pellissippi
Middle School Math Bowl to see how their knowledge and
skills stack up to others in the region who are in the
same grade. The bowl is sponsored by the math faculty
at Pellissippi State.

The
Music program will hold its annual Spring Choral Concert
on May 6 at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

Library
director receives award
Peter
Nerzak, the director of Library Services at Pellissippi
State, has received the Tennessee Library Association’s
(TLA) Honor Award. He was presented the award at the TLA
conference held March 17-19 in Knoxville.
Nerzak
was given the award for his role in helping the Tennessee
Board of Regents Virtual Library to become an integral
part of the Regents Online Degree Programs. Nerzak was
also awarded for his efforts in working with TBR to purchase
electronic books for use by participating libraries that
resulted in a significant cost savings to those libraries.

Edwards
named to Board of Directors
President
Allen Edwards has been named to the Board of Directors
of the American Association of Community Colleges, a nonprofit
organization that is the leading, national proponent of
community colleges. The AACC is governed by a 32-member
Board of Directors, 24 of whom were elected by the membership.
The membership elected Edwards to a three-year term.
