Combined show for quilters, crafters premieres at the College

Lovers of fine arts, crafts and quilts will enjoy an array of original designs on May 18-20, when the Foothills Craft Guild and the Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee host their first-ever combined spring show at Pellissippi State.

More than 30 juried craft exhibitors will participate, along with fine quilters from all over the U.S.

Hours for the show, which takes place on the Pellissippi Campus, are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 20.

Cheryl Sachan of the quilting group and Karen Noggle, who represents the crafters, are co-directing the show.

Both agree that the event planners chose an excellent location in Pellissippi State.

“With its well-lighted, architecturally pleasing design,” said Sachan, “the south-facing Goins Administration Building offers the perfect setting to showcase the more than 100 beautiful quilts.” The quilt collection will be on display in the Student Lounge near the front entrance of Goins.

“We are pleased the College made this facility available,” said Noggle, “because we want this show to be accessible to the entire community.” Guild artisans will display their wares in the Courtyard.

Admission and parking are free.

“The Foothills Craft Guild will feature for show and sale an array of crafts, including clay, fiber, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, photography and wood,” Noggle said. Chartered in 1968, the 280-member organization is the oldest artisan’s guild in Tennessee.

“The quilt designs are original or stem from traditional quilt patterns,” said Sachan. “Both hand-stitched and more modern machine-stitched quilts will be exhibited.”

This year marks the 27th annual show for the quilters, who will compete for cash prizes totaling more than $5,000. A limited number of small quilts will be for sale.
