Counselor earns national certification

Betsy Boyd, counselor at Pellissippi State's Blount County Center, recently earned a National Certified Counselor designation.

To earn certification from the National Board for Certified Counselors, candidates must hold a graduate degree in counseling from a regionally accredited institution, meet counseling experience criteria and pass a national board examination.

A Maryville resident and a 17-year employee of Pellissippi State, Boyd received a master of science degree in educational psychology in 1990 and an Ed.S. in counseling from the University of Tennessee in 2001. She has worked in counseling services at the college since 1997. Before joining the counseling staff, Boyd supervised the Educational Resources Center at the Blount County campus.

NBCC, the largest national counselor credentialing organization in the country, is in Greensboro, North Carolina. Certification is a step toward becoming a licensed professional counselor.
