College honor society earns four statewide awards

The Pellissippi State chapter of a national honor society has earned four top statewide awards for college and community service and for chapter growth.

The college's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, which recently inducted more than 60 new members, received a Bronze Pinnacle Award for membership gains of at least 5 percent and a Chapter of Light Award for participating in at least three regional activities emphasizing service to college and community.

In addition, the chapter achieved a three-star level of meeting its objectives in fellowship, scholarship, leadership and service, as part of the national organization's five-star development program.

Also, chapter member Kevin Bullington won a fifth-place Fellowship Hallmark Award for his essay on how successful the chapter has been in building teamwork and getting members involved in activities after a significant turnover in officers and advisors.

Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 1.5 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and Germany. About 100,000 students are inducted into Phi Theta Kappa each year, and about 200,000 students participate in society programs annually.

Pellissippi State's chapter inducted 62 new members in early April and has about 275 members. For additional information on the Pellissippi State chapter, contact chapter president Karen Quammen at 387-3712 or s_kfquammen@pstcc.edu.
