Akima Club honors past president with Foundation grant
The late Patty Thompson, long-time member of the Akima Club of
Knoxville and past president of the organization, has been honored
by the club with a scholarship in her name to the Pellissippi State
Foundation.
“Patty was one of the most revered members who ever served
in Akima,” said Akima president Lorna Norwood. “Patty’s
leadership and impact on the club will always be remembered, and
the loss of her kindness, understanding and compassion may never
be filled. To keep her memory alive, we wanted to honor her years
of service to the community by renaming our support to the Foundation
the Patty Thompson Memorial Akima Club Scholarship.”
“The Akima Club of Knoxville has been a College supporter
since 1992 and recently increased its annual gift from $1,000
to $1,500,” said Les Fout, director of major gift development
of the Pellissippi State Foundation. “We appreciate their
support of our goals for higher education.”
Akima Club, established 60 years ago, is a women’s service
organization that has given more than $600,000 back to the community
in just the last two decades and provides thousands of volunteer
hours annually to community agencies and organizations. Akima
Club presented this year’s gift to the Foundation at a luncheon
May 17 at The Foundry in Knoxville.
Since 2002, the Foundation has raised more than $3 million dollars
to support the school.
