College computer class helps local organization

A class project during the spring semester at the College has international implications for a local organization that asked for help.

The advanced class in the Java language of computer programming, says Assistant Professor Laxman Nathawat, helped the Children’s International Summer Village’s Smoky Mountain chapter organize its database.

“This was a community project, and it means CISV can now better maintain and manage their membership database using Web-based interface,” said Nathawat. “It’s a step toward our commitment to help the local community in using modern technology and software products.

“And while it helped the organization, the project also helped our students, because it called for them to create usable software products and documents.”

At the end of the semester, the students presented a project briefing to Laura Duckett of CISV on the final results of their efforts. In turn, she presented each of them a certificate of appreciation for their work.

CISV is a volunteer organization that brings youth from different countries together to build relationships and break down prejudices.

The Computer Science and Information Technology program will offer the same class (CSIT 2655 Enterprise Java Programming) again spring 2007 semester. More information is available by contacting Laxman Nathawat at 694-6490 or lsnathawat@pstcc.edu.
