Associate professor recognized by international honor society

Carol O’Farrell, an associate professor of English, has received the Paragon Award for new advisors from the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa.

“My students nominated me and I was surprised when I won it,” said O’Farrell after the award was announced at the organization’s convention in Seattle. “It was an honor to be appreciated by them.

“I try to teach students the value of scholarship, leadership and service.”

The College’s Alpha Theta Xi chapter of PTK has about 300 students who are members of the international honor society for two-year colleges. There are more than 1,200 chapters around the world, making PTK the largest honor society serving two-year colleges. In order to be a member, students must have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale.
