Top faculty and staff named for 2006

Seven faculty and staff members and one instructional team have earned recognition at the College’s 2006 Employee Awards Ceremony.

All winners received a cash award funded by the Pellissippi State Foundation.

Keith S. Norris earned the Excellence in Teaching award, the College’s top honor for a full-time faculty member.

“Teaching is my favorite part of the job at Pellissippi State, and the more I teach, the more I am convinced of the quality of our students,” said Norris. Norris is an associate professor of English and joined the faculty full time in 1995.

Annie Gray, an associate professor of English who’s been here since 2001, received the Innovations award for designing and implementing a combined course that allowed students to meet their academic requirements for several courses in one semester.

“I am excited that the course has been recognized, because it works,” said Gray.

The team of employees from the Adult Education program earned the Gene Joyce Visionary award. The program started in 1992 and is now one of the largest adult education programs in the state. It serves more than 1,500 students a year with educational classes and support services. The team members are Joan Newman, director of the Learning and Testing Center; Beverly Jolley, Adult Education teacher; Patricia Varga, Learning and Testing Center secretary; and Joe Morin and Tamela Wheeler, assistant coordinators for Adult Education.

The Outstanding Full-time Faculty is Tyra Barrett, associate professor of Business and Computer Technology. She joined Pellissippi State as a full-time employee in 1994. Marty Komorny, an adjunct faculty member of English who has been with the College since 1996, was named Outstanding Adjunct Faculty.

Chosen as Outstanding Administrator was Phyllis Pace, Counseling director, and Barbara Bailes was named Outstanding Support Professional. She is the graduation analyst lead worker in Admissions and Records.

J.J. Patterson, a computer technician in Network and Technical Services, was named the Outstanding Technical, Service and Maintenance staff member.
