Inside Pellissippi

Madcap comedy scheduled at Pellissippi State in October

“The Servant of Two Masters,” a comic play by 18th century playwright Carlo Goldoni, will be staged at Pellissippi State October 21-23.

The play also will be presented in the annual American College Theatre Festival at Tennessee Technological University later the same month.

Pellissippi State performances will take place in the Performing Arts Center October 21 at 8 p.m., October 22 at 8 p.m. and October 23 at 2 p.m. The competition performance will take place in Cookeville either October 27 or October 28.

Written in 1743 and published in 1755, “The Servant of Two Masters” is thought to be the first play of its kind written for a company of “commedia dell’ arte” players.

“The play is a cross between traditional Italian commedia and postmodern vaudeville,” said Charles Miller, assistant professor of theater. “This new version of Goldoni’s classic pits the madcap servant Truffaldino against masters, mistresses, lovers, lawyers and 27 plates of meatballs.

“Imagine a Bob Hope or Woody Allen comedy written by Monty Python and performed with the physical bravura of Chaplin or Keaton—with places in the script for ad-libs and audience participation.”
