Volunteers still needed for balloon festival

Volunteers are signing up, but many more are needed to assist the College at the Pellissippi State Hot Air Balloon Festival 2005 September 23-24. Also needed are individuals to work as crew members with the pilots all weekend.

The festival begins September 23 at 4 p.m. and continues September 24, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Children’s activities, tethered balloon rides, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors and a “Pellissippi Idol” contest are part of the family-oriented event.

A balloon “glow” is scheduled September 23 next to the campus pond, beginning at approximately 8 p.m. Pilots will choreograph the lighting of their balloons to music.

Tethered balloon rides are scheduled September 23, 5-9 p.m., and September 24, 7:30-10 a.m. and 5-8 p.m., weather permitting. Balloons are to launch September 24 at approximately 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting.

Country music star Josh Turner and his band will perform September 23 at 6:30 p.m. in a concert sponsored by WIVK. Mitch Rutman, a Knoxville guitarist-songwriter who once toured with the Dave Matthews Band and appears on the “Live in Chicago” CD, will perform September 24 at 6:30 p.m. in a concert sponsored by WOKI “The River.”

Other entertainers will include the Team Joe Western-style dancers from Cotton Eyed Joe, September 23, 5:30 p.m.; the Steve Davis Family, a gospel and bluegrass group, September 24, 11 a.m.; dancers from the Angela Floyd School for the Dancer, September 24 at noon; and the Four Grand Quartet, part of the Smoky Mountain Harmony Show Chorus, September 24, 1 p.m. Chris Baratta will impersonate Elvis Presley September 24, 2-2:40 p.m.

Admission is $10 for a weekend car pass, with additional charges for tethered balloon rides and some children’s activities. Proceeds will benefit the Pellissippi State Foundation.
