‘Dual Enrollment’: high schoolers
earn Pellissippi State credits at reduced cost
By Kathy Byrd
Juniors and seniors in five Blount County high schools are earning
college credits this fall—and getting a tuition break—thanks
to Pellissippi State and a lottery-funded state grant.
Alcoa High School, Heritage High School and Maryville Christian
School are the newest participants in Pellissippi State’s
“Dual Enrollment” program. Maryville and William Blount
high schools, as well as seven schools in Knox County, are also
participating.
The program enables qualified students to earn college credit
at the same time as they complete high school coursework.
The Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant, offered for the first time
in 2005, provides up to $300 toward tuition for one course per
semester starting as early as a student’s junior year.
Alcoa, Heritage, Maryville and William Blount high school students
take freshman composition, while some Maryville Christian School
students are enrolled in Intermediate Spanish. Since a faculty
member from Pellissippi State visits the high school to teach
the college course, students do not have to travel to our campus.
For more information about Pellissippi State’s Dual Enrollment
program, including how students can qualify to take part, call
