Cardwell bestows philosophy endowment

Charles Cardwell, assistant professor of Philosophy, has established a new endowment with the Pellissippi State Foundation.

The endowment will enhance the College’s Philosophy discipline by funding professional development for adjunct faculty, encouraging course innovations and rewarding outstanding students.

One example of how the money will be used is to provide funds for lodging expenses for adjunct faculty members to attend Tennessee Philosophy Association meetings.

“In addition,” said Cardwell, “I hope the endowment will be able to support development of innovative approaches to teaching philosophy and to reward students who show exceptional promise in the discipline.”

Cardwell says he has wanted to make a difference for some time.

“The current major gifts campaign seemed like a good time to start,” he said, “and I would be delighted if my gift inspires folks in other departments to establish endowments to benefit their respective disciplines.”

Cardwell came to the College as an adjunct faculty member in 1999; he was employed full time in 2004. He holds bachelor’s degrees in both physics and philosophy from Kansas State University and a master’s and doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Rochester in New York.
