Employee Profile
Name:
Charles Cardwell
Title: Assistant Professor of Philosophy
Major Responsibilities: Provoking/inspiring students
to exercise their minds and break out of their self-imposed immaturity.
Length of service at the College: Started as an
adjunct in the spring of 1999 and became full time in the fall of
2004.
Place of Birth: Oak Ridge
Family members: Cathy (wife), Amy (daughter), Zuki
(dog)
Something no one knows about you: As the author
of a logic textbook, my only proper response is, “I do not
know.”
Greatest achievement or proudest moment: Rather
than look to the past, I prefer to live each day as fully as I can;
the best is always yet to come.
Favorite things outside work: Reading, writing,
thinking, walking, taking part in family outings.
Most rewarding part of your job: Seeing a student
suddenly “get it.”
Most influential person in your life and why: My
father. From him I learned the value of doing good work, setting
priorities, self-discipline, caring, service and humor.
Favorite quote: I have probably a dozen favorites,
but one of them comes from the tutor in “The Last Emperor
of China”: “Words are important: If you cannot say what
you mean, you will never mean what you say ... and a gentleman always
means what he says.”
